September 11th - We Will Never Forget
Yesterday marked the fourteenth anniversary of September 11th.
We all remember where we were that day when we heard the news, and we will never forget the awful feeling of realizing just how fragile life and liberty can be.
I hope you’ll join me in remembering those we lost on that day and honoring the members of our military and the first-responders who answered the call without hesitation. Today we remember and give thanks for all of those who have sacrificed to keep our great republic free.
Rokita Votes Against Iranian Nuclear Agreement
Yesterday, I voted against President Obama’s Iran Deal.
Traveling the District in August, the issue I heard about most was Iran. Hoosiers overwhelmingly oppose this dangerous deal and President Obama has lost this debate with the American people. Friday’s vote in the House represents the unified voice of the American people rejecting this reckless agreement.
The President claims that rejecting this deal will bring war, but I believe accepting this deal will cause war for at least two reasons. First, this deal allows $150 billion to flow into the world’s largest sponsor of terror. I highly doubt that the Iranian people will benefit from these funds. Instead, the Iranian regime will try to carry out what they have been chanting, ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Death to America’. Second, this deal triggers a Mideast arms race and ultimately makes the world a more dangerous place.
Fighting Back Obamacare
This week, a federal judge for the United States District of Columbia ruled that the House of Representatives has standing to challenge President Obama’s unilateral changes to ObamaCare.
Time after time, the Obama Administration proves its complete disregard for our country’s Constitution by side-stepping Congress and pushing an agenda that is harmful to our nation. The President cannot pick and choose which parts of the law to enforce. This ruling reinforces what the President disregards, that separation of powers is core to the foundation of our government and must be respected.
Every Member of Congress takes an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. It is our duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch and this lawsuit is one tool in our toolbox we can use. I will continue defending the Constitution against Presidential overreach. Last year, I supported the House Resolution authorizing the House to file a civil lawsuit against the Obama Administration in federal court.
Progress on Planned Parenthood
It has been two months since I supported efforts to conduct hearings into the gruesome practices depicted in, now, nine undercover videos, detailing the sale of fetal tissue.
Currently three committees are actively investigating these practices. The Energy& Commerce Committee is focused on Planned Parenthood's activities. The Oversight& Government Reform Committee is examining how Planned Parenthood is funded. Finally, The Judiciary Committee is looking at how the Justice Department is enforcing the law.
(Hoosier Leaders who joined me for the Indiana Family's Institute 2015 Hoosier Leadership Series)
While speaking with Hoosiers during the Indiana Family's Institute 2015 Hoosier Leadership Series, we discussed Planned Parenthood funding in the midst of an approaching government funding deadline. I will always support defunding Planned Parenthood. However, no one wants a government shut-down.
What is important to note, is that Planned Parenthood receives seventy-five percent of its funding from automatic, mandatory spending programs like Medicaid. Currently, $528 million in federal grants fund Planned Parenthood. Therefore, even with a government shut-down Planned Parenthood would still receive that automatic funding.
(Explaining Planned Parenthood's Funding Process to the Indiana Family Institute Leadership Series)
It is important that we continue to educate the public and frame the discussion. Recent reports indicate that a majority of Americans have yet to see these videos. It is essential to stay informed about the fight to protect life and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
I will continue to work in Congress to make sure we get to the bottom of these horrific practices. This is why I cosponsored the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, which would keep federal funds from going to organizations that perform abortion. All life is sacred and we will not turn a blind eye to this callous disregard for human life. We also must make sure we are responsibly governing and will continue to work with my colleagues in the House to keep the government open and continue investigations into Planned Parenthood's activities.
Thank you for your continued interest in Congress and for supporting my efforts to bring Hoosier common sense to Washington. Take care.
