Holding Political Elites Accountable, Tax Reform Good News, & More

Apr 21, 2018 Issues: Tax Reform, Spending Cuts and Debt

Dear Friend,

Thank you for the opportunity to update you on the work of the 115th Congress.  I trust this finds you and your family well, as we work together to bring Hoosier common sense to Washington.

Farewell to a Broken Tax Code

With tax filings for 2017 due this week, Hoosiers can finally close the chapter on a broken tax code.  Thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which I supported in December and President Trump signed into law, rates are lower and simpler.  Next year's taxes will be first on the new system, which is the largest rewrite in 32 years.

President Trump's tax cuts are also kicking in, resulting in benefits for Hoosiers such as lower utility rates and bonuses for employees.  Some of the highlight Indiana victories of tax reform include:

  • AndyMark in Kokomo will double its workforce.
  • Family Express will be raising its base wage at all 70 locations.
  • Albanese Confectionary in Merrillville will be giving bonuses up to $2,000 as long as tax reform stays in effect.
  • FedEx is expanding the FedEx Express Indianapolis Hub.

I want to see the tax reform bonuses go further.  To make that happen, I introduced H.R. 5012, the Creating Real and Useful Middle-Class Benefits and Savings (CRUMBS) Act.  My bill would make the tax reform bonuses tax-free and has been endorsed by FreedomWorks and Americans for Tax Reform.

Holding Political Elites Accountable

On Wednesday, I joined with 11 of my colleagues to call on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate several Obama-era officials for potential violations of federal statutes.  We live in a nation of laws and it is absolutely imperative that the law applies equally to everyone.

We cannot allow those in high authority positions of government to flagrantly violate our laws and then walk away without fully answering to the American people.  That is why I support an investigation against officials including former FBI Director James Comey, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and former Acting Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe.  We have a responsibility to ensure equal justice under the law.

On the Dana Show to Discuss Gun Rights

On Tuesday, I was on the Dana Show to discuss protecting the Second Amendment.  Dana Loesch is a conservative commentator and a spokesperson for the National Rifle Association (NRA).  She is a tireless defender of the Second Amendment.

During her show, we talked about my letter to the General Services Administration (GSA) calling to terminate their contract with Citibank due to the company's new policies that target customers wishing to exercise their Second Amendment rights.  Citibank's new guidelines penalize clients who do not align their sales policies to match the lender's restrictive new commercial firearms policy.

As I shared with Dana, Citibank had no problems doing business with Iran, but has now decided to target law-abiding American businesses to take a moral stand.  Iran is a country that flagrantly uses weapons that are illegal in the United States and has an oppressive human rights record.  We both believe that the government should not be relying on Citibank for business transaction.  Listen to the full interview here.

Remembering Barbara Bush

On Tuesday, we lost former First Lady Barbara Bush, one of America's finest.  She is one of only two women to be the wife of one President and the mother of another.  She has always been a true advocate for the American family and will be cherished in our history forever.

As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, I deeply respected her tireless advocacy for children's literacy.  She knew that teaching people to read could help decrease other major problems including crime and homelessness.  As a mother, she recognized that the parent is a child's first teacher and are crucial for setting the tone of their education.

Kathy and my prayers are with the Bush family at this difficult time, may God's peace comfort them.

Thank you for your continued interest in Congress and for supporting my efforts to bring Hoosier common sense to Washington. Take care.
