Ignite the Future - Indiana's Bicentennial

Hoosiers have just finished up a year of celebrations for our state’s Bicentennial.   December 11th was the anniversary of Indiana becoming the 19th state in the Union.  This past year, we have been celebrating Indiana’s rich history.

On the 11th, we recognized Indiana’s bright and prosperous future.  I was honored to attend the finale of Indiana’s Bicentennial year at “Celebrate Indiana: Ignite the Future.”  This event was a two-hour program with a wide variety of speakers from diverse faith backgrounds and featured speeches, music, dance, and more.  Our Governor and Vice President-elect Mike Pence was in attendance.

Tatum Parker with Tatum's Bag of Fun was a speaker at the Bicentennial's final event.

A shining example of Indiana’s future was one of the closing speakers, Tatum Parker.  When she was six, Tatum was in the hospital battling a rare bone cancer, Ewing’s Sarcoma.  During her stay, she received a Bag of Fun from the Gabby Krause Foundation.  These bags contain games and toys that truly help lift children’s spirits when they are most vulnerable.  After her cancer, Tatum started a local version of the Bags of Fun program, Tatum’s Bags of Fun.  At the Ignite the Future event, Tatum was one of those providing the closing message and her story of overcoming cancer and starting a charity is one that fills me with hope and pride in the next generation of Hoosiers.

Happy Birthday, Indiana!  May the next 200 years be even better.
