A Balanced Budget for a Prosperous Future

On Thursday, the House Budget Committee passed the FY 2019 A Brighter American Future Budget. As Vice Chair of the House Budget Committee, I have been working hard on behalf of Hoosiers and the American people to get rid of the failed spending policies of the liberal elite and to ensure we have a budget that reduces our deficit and builds on our growing economic prosperity.

A Brighter American Future Budget is a framework for the House to continue working with President Trump on pushing a pro-growth, pro-business agenda. We spent years watching President Obama spend trillions of dollars on failed government programs that did nothing but drive up spending. Ours is a vision for results oriented government that will:

  • Balance the budget in nine years by achieving $8.1 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade.
  • Reduce auto-pilot government spending by $302 billion.
  • Continue the economic growth we have been seeing since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
  • Encourage a more responsible use of taxpayer dollars by confronting wasteful spending and holding government accountable.
  • Scale back the overreaches of the federal government and restore power back to the states.

Call for Investigation on Minors Abortions

It is heinous to hear that Indiana abortion providers illegally provided abortions to 48 girls all under the age of 16 and failed to disclose these procedures to the Department of Child Services as required by law.

These entities may be recipients of federal Title X grant funds, which require compliance with state laws to ensure proper precautions taken by doctors and staff to flag any potential child abuse, molestation, sexual abuse, rape or incest. In Indiana, that is disclosure to the Department of Child Services.

Congressman Jim Banks and I sent a letter to Attorney General Curtis Hill requesting an immediate investigation into these allegations. Read our letter here. Indiana Right to Life has also sent a letter to Attorney General Hill.

House Passes Farm Bill

This week, I voted in favor of H.R. 2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, which is the latest Farm Bill.

Passage of this bill is a win for Hoosier farmers and promotes fiscally responsible agriculture policy. Indiana's agriculture industry needs certainty for their farms to make plans. The bill strengthens various agricultural programs, like those that enable farmers to market their products to other countries.

The Farm Bill also includes much-needed reforms for able-bodied recipients of government assistance. President Trump asked us to give this because at a time of historically low unemployment, we have record numbers of adults choosing to not work while collecting food stamps. That is why I fought for strengthening the work requirement in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to ensure these programs are serving those in need.

Rokita Reading - Border Security and Immigration Reform

A clickable offering of books and articles that I've read recently and highly recommend, as we strive together to "Keep the Republic."

As the House considers immigration reform and border security legislation, I wanted to share with you two articles that have helped inform my positions.

The first is The Truth about Separating Kids and was written by Rich Lowry and published in National Review. This article sheds light on what is happening at the border. The liberal and media elites have been working overtime to push false narratives. Their emotional outbursts and loud cries of injustice distort the truth and provoke bad policy that would put criminal illegal aliens before American citizens. Lowry makes clear the "the Trump administration isn’t changing the rules that pertain to separating an adult from the child."

The second is DACA Kids Approved Despite Murder, Rape, and Sex Crimes Arrests, by Stephen Dinan, printed in the Washington Times. DACA was created by executive order in the Obama Administration and seven percent of program recipients have criminal record. As critics push the narrative that President Trump and Republicans are immoral and emotionless, they never discuss how American lives are being put at risk. This is outrageous, and we should not be granting legal status to those who cannot follow the rule of law.

Thank you for your continued interest in Congress and for supporting my efforts to bring Hoosier common sense to Washington. Take care.

Sincerely,

Todd Rokita

This week, the House Budget Committee marked up and passed our 2009 budget. We unveiled it at a press conference where we let the American people know how this budget promotes economic growth and prosperity.
