Rokita: President Cares More About Politics Than Our Future

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, a member of the House Budget Committee, today issued the following statement after remarks by the President regarding a possible increase in the debt ceiling:

“The cynicism of this President is breathtaking.  He is happy to talk about the need to reduce our deficit, and even voted against raising the debt ceiling when it was politically convenient.  But when it’s time for him to lead – when our nation desperately needs sober, serious and honest leadership – he refuses to offer any plan at all.

“By refusing to even acknowledge the reality of his record-setting trillion-dollar annual deficits, and by refusing to offer any meaningful spending cuts, the president is showing that he cares more about politics than our fiscal future,” said Rokita.

In 2006, then-Senator Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2006, citing a ‘failure of leadership’ by ‘shifting the burdens of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.’

Last Friday, the White House informed the House Budget Committee it will not, for the fourth time in five years, propose a budget to Congress on time, as it is legally required to do.
