Rokita: Boehner plan now a solution that gives Americans a vote on their future
Washington, DC – Today Rep. Todd Rokita praised the revised Boehner plan for forcing Congress to send a balanced budget amendment to the states for ratification, giving Americans a chance to vote for their future:
“Already a sound tactical move, Speaker Boehner’s revised proposal takes an even further step to include the main permanent and structural reform that would really solve this entire problem: a balanced budget amendment, sent to the American people for ratification. With this change, the Boehner plan has gone from a tactical move in the interim to a solution that would solve the problem long-term, giving us and future Americans long-term piece of mind.
If Senators are serious about reaching a solution to our debt crisis by August 2, they will accept a balanced budget amendment. Failure to do so is a clear indication they do not trust the American people to decide whether we will begin to live within our means, or whether we will continue to commit inter-generational theft by stealing the future from our children and grandchildren. Because right now, without any permanent and structural reform like a balance budget amendment, that is exactly what we’re doing,”Rokita said.
The revised Budget Control Act specifies that before President Obama can request another debt ceiling increase, spending cuts larger than the debt ceiling increase must be produced and a balanced budget amendment must be sent to the states for ratification.
